Baltimore e Houston: NEWS

The Maryland Shock Trauma Center figures indicate that Shock Trauma alone treated a staggering 430 gunshot wounds in 2004.
Typically, a bounty hunter brings a fugitive back from Mexico in one of three ways: he bribes a Mexican authority to bring the guy to the border; he grabs the guy himself and shoves him in the trunk of his car; or he has his partner hold the guy's family at gunpoint until he's in U.S. custody. McKee and Valero apparently wanted to do it the legit way. The problem was, they weren't quite sure what that meant.

A fifth of November to remember remember

backbytes: "It was a very loud explosion so we all went to town before the police turned up." We're reporting this out of admiration.
Sacred Texts: African Religion: Ultimately, we are all Africans. (Studies of mitochondrial DNA have proven that all human beings are descended from a small population (less than a hundred individuals) that emerged from Africa about 60,000 years ago.) The earliest written religious texts as well as the first documented monotheistic religion also developed in Africa. During the European dark ages, many ancient manuscripts were preserved in African libraries in places such as Ethiopia and Timbuctoo.

Fruminator: The Tulip-Bulb Craze

The Biggest Market Crashes in History: The Tulip-Bulb Craze: In 1593 tulips were brought from Turkey and introduced to the Dutch. The novelty of the new flower made it widely sought after and therefore fairly pricey. After a time, the tulips contracted a non-fatal virus known as mosaic, which didn't kill the tulip population but altered them causing 'flames' of color to appear upon the petals. The color patterns came in a wide variety, increasing the rarity of an already unique flower. Thus, tulips, which were already selling at a premium, began to rise in price according to how their virus alterations were valued, or desired.

Schermaglie clueless

He explained why he thought HP was in trouble. HP's lawyers filed a cease-and-desist order. Sun fired back, and the issue was dropped.

Roadkill: real connection to the meat

Now the 25-year-old enjoys roadkill regularly with his friends. Last fall, they found two deer and spent three days preparing the carcasses in their campus-area house; the hide from one of them is still hanging in the basement, waiting to be tanned.

Erisbright and his friends are not alone. Activists all over the country are being inspired by an organization called Wildroots. Located on a 30-acre homestead in North Carolina, these "green anarchists" are critical of modern society and believe that reconnecting with wildness will abolish the oppressive institutions of civilization.

Members of Wildroots live a primitive lifestyle and practice earth-based skills, like primitive shelter building, hide tanning, herbal medicine and crafts.
Alternative food sources, like roadkill, are essential to their cause, as is outreach, and the group travels the country promoting their lifestyle at conferences and workshops. One of their publications, a zine called Feral Forager, details how to eat roadkill.

    SXSW Baby!: Grupo Fantasma

Grupo Fantasma: ancora Prentiss Riddle con la cumbia Tex Mex. Vedere questo da Chapel Perilous.

    Libri di città

Yatta: Davis wrote Planet of Slums, an article on the effects of an increased urbanization of the globe without an increase in the infrastructure to support it. It's a good article that's been turned into a book. Mike Davis is speaking at CUNY in Manhattan on Wednesday.

World Changing: Robert Neuwirth has a thing for squatters. Fascinated by the illegal, homemade neighborhoods lived in by a billion people worldwide, Neuwirth spent two years (courtesy of a MacArthur Foundation grant) living in four squatter neighborhoods around the world: Rocinha, in Rio, Brazil; Kibera, in Nairobi, Kenya; Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, in Mumbai, India; and Sultanbeyli, in Istanbul, Turkey. His time living in these neighborhoods has led to a book - Shadow Cities - and a blog, SquatterCity.

World Changing: Jared Diamond’s new book Collapse has joined the ranks of Joseph Tainter’s book The Collapse of Complex Societies as a seminal work on why civilizations fall apart. But what can these works tell us, if we don’t want to be doomed?

Extinction and natural disasters are the trope of our times. Why is the BBC's Horizon team so obsessed with the end of the world?

    RZA on NPR

chemistry, class: "Yesterday she sat down with Wu Tang's RZA, and, per O-Dub, had her game face on (or whatever the radio equivalent is). Somehow seems fitting that it is on the occasion of his new book, The Wu Tang Manual, and not timed to any new music."

    Insightful Evidence

(Swhack it) The Clark-Trimble experiments: "In the experiments which finally confirmed him in this view, and which he demonstrated before the Royal Society in London, Clark-Trimble arranged four hundred pieces of carpet in ascending degrees of quality, from coarse matting to priceless Chinese silk. Pieces of toast and marmalade, graded, weighed, and measured, were then dropped on each piece of carpet, and the marmalade-downwards incidence was statistically analysed. The toast fell right-side-up every time on the cheap carpet, except when the cheap carpet was screened from the rest (in which case the toast didnt know that Clark-Trimble had other and better carpets), and it fell marmalade-downwards every time on the Chinese silk. Most remarkable of all, the marmalade-downwards incidence for the intermediate grades was found to vary exactly with the quality of carpet."

    Willie Tee - Teasin' you

Ora vorrei scaricare Wasted (The Gaturs Featuring Willie Tee), mentre stamattina ho sentito la sua roba vecchia nella compila Teasin' You - Tee's recordings with Nola Records (1965-1971, arranged by the legendary Wardell Quezerque) and the self-produced singles from Tee's own lable Gatur Records. While Tee went on to lead the funk band the Gaturs and was the force behind the Wild Magnolias, these recordings (anchored by his biggest hit "Teasin' You") serve as the richest bedrock to his electric career. Check back: louisianamusicfactory.

Patato teamed with Totico for the esteemed Afro-Cuban rumba workout Patato And Totico '67 on Verve (reissued on Mediterraneo '92), including tres guitar maestro Arsenio Rodríguez, legendary bassist Israel 'Cachao' López, singers, percussionists and composers Papaíto and Virgilio Marti (d '95); also on Verve, he sessioned on Chico O'Farrill's Married Well '67 and Miguelito Valdés's Inolvidables '67, the latter arranged and conducted by O'Farrill, including Machito, Graciela, Victor Paz. Sessioned on Cachao's revered cult LPs Cachao y su Descarga '77 Vol. 1 '76 and Dos, Vol. 2 '77 on Salsoul and important all-star charanga gathering Super Típica de Estrellas '76 on All-Art (reissued on WS Latino '95) directed by Don Gonzalo Fernández.

Ho scaricato More than mambo, una compilona di jazz latino.

    Infocult: Polar music, a query

    From ‘A’ to ‘B’ by bus... Baltic-style

One of the nice things about living in Riga is the fact that it’s equidistant from the other two Baltic capitals. You can swing either way in the space of just four or five hours (given the elements). Except that I am one of those many unfortunate people who is forced, through the lack of something called a car, to make the journey by bus. And what a journey it invariably is.
